Introduction:

The July Hands-On Group activity will be a discussion of video settings. Most of us are still photographers, and we have spent a considerable sum on modern equipment. And most of the current mirrorless cameras are considered hybrids. They are both a still and a video camera. The last few generations of DSLRs also have considerable video capabilities. In this meeting let’s flip the switch, so to speak and explore the video settings. This is not about being a filmmaker; this is about taking a little reel or clip of video to complement our stills. This is an activity for all skill levels.

Overview:

“There are no rules in filmmaking. Only sins. And the cardinal sin is dullness.” – Frank Capra¹

We’ll discuss the difference in exposure from stills to video. Specifically, we’ll set “rules” for shutter-speed. We’ll talk about slo-mo. We’ll talk over video terms preparing for that flip the switch moment. We’ll discuss various video formats: 4k, FHD, 720p, SD… And 24p, 30p, 60p, 120p… And why you might choose one over another. We discuss our diminishing attention span and why we should keep the clips short. We’ll touch on social media. And speak of shooting vertically to better fit phone consumption. And we’ll touch on sound… The reel key to good video… As always, bring your patience and cooperation. This should be a good information exchange.

What to bring:

Camera

Favorite walk around lens

Tripod

What to prepare:

Review your cameras video menus and bring questions.
